In spite of the threatening rain and uncooperative weather, the Oak River Run 5K race took place last Saturday. Check out the great photos on www.altavistasports.com and start your workout now so you can participate in this event next year. Runners enjoyed refreshments, got their T-shirts and prizes, just like most races, but they also made new friends and had a great workout on a safe and beautiful route.
Congratulations goes out to all the winners.
A. J. Dennis from New Smyrna was first in the male, 15-18 category. Oak Hill’s own Steve McGee took the first place in the male 55 to 59 category.
Now, for the ladies. Bobbie Cornelius of Edgewater, and Oak Hill’s own Helen McGee tied for female, 45 to 49; Oak Hill’s Sherry Findley and Jan McGee also placed in that category. Special thanks to all who participated and to Dana Herlin who was the race organizer and Director.
Bob Jones grew up in Oak Hill playing baseball. He was good. What you may not remember is how he stayed connected to his favorite sport once he stopped playing, which wasn’t really that long ago. Bob has been a baseball umpire or referee for other sports for nearly 40 years. Perhaps he umpired one of your games, or perhaps your child’s game. Whether you always agreed with his call or not, Bob was always fair and honest because that’s the way he was taught to play ball and to live. He is the son of Floyd and Iona Jones who were just “good people.” Well, Bob’s younger brother, Keith, celebrated his birthday last Sunday and the family gathered in his honor. But this weekend, family and friends will gather again to celebrate Bob’s “retirement” from officiating sports events. His “last game” will be held on Saturday, but his love for sports will continue. Thanks, Bob for all you have given to the “love of the game.”
The Oak Hill Garden Club will meet on Wednesday, Feb., 10, at 1:30 p.m. at the VIA Hall. A Valentine’s Day program is planned. Everyone is invited.
Happy birthday goes out to Gary Geiger, who was honored on Sunday with a family party. Those attending included: His wife, Brenda, his mother, Marvaleen Geiger, his children, Megan, Nicki, and Kellee and their families, Leon and Dorothy Lee Hutchingson, and his brother, Bill Geiger. Bill arrived last Thursday from Arlington, Ohio, to visit for a week. His mother will remain her until March.
Linda Blumenthal was also honored on Sunday. She was surprised with a birthday party, given by her daughter, Beth. Family and friends gathered to share cake and fun with Linda, as she continued to deny moving into the next decade.
Lanell and Roger Huber arrived last week from Illinois to meet their newest addition to the family. That would be their grandson, Rydan, youngest son of Dustin and Mamie Huber. On Saturday, Mamie’s mom, Danette Allen, was honored at the Huber home, as she celebrated her birthday with family. Those attending included: Danette’s husband, James, her parents, Dan and Euda Mary Alderman, her daughter, Laura, and her husband, Mark Henry, and of course, the entire Huber family. On Sunday, Dan and Euda Mry Alderman entertained this group for lunch, but added additional family and friends. Therefore, we know that Danette had a wonderful birthday. Congratulations!
John and Stephanie Nicolott spent time on Monday visiting with Frances Johnson. They lived next door to her for many years, and moved west of DeLand several years ago. They enjoyed a good visit, catching up on the “news.”
Al and Cathy Judd are visiting friends and relatives in Kentucky before going to see her brother, Bobby in Indianapolis, Indiana. Before returning home, they will drive to Oklahoma to see their son, Trey and his family.
The Community Trust will soon be opening a thrift shop in Oak Hill, so please gather things you wish to discard and call 345-3094 to have them picked up or to drop them off.
Wishing you a wonderful week; and asking for you to share the news.
